Our mission: To inspire stewardship of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests.

It seems for the most part that Pennsylvanians did not suffer much in the way of adverse conditions from devastating Florence. Even the Yough and Casselman rivers have receded into their familiar contours now. Do be aware that there are still places where facilities may be limited or even closed. It is never a bad idea in circumstances such as this to call ahead before your visit. Or visit the State Parks Facebook page where many of the parks share their latest information in one place.

The masthead this week comes from yours truly from my swing up north (forgive me, oh, High Potentate of the Allegheny, for not being in touch) - a little sunset at M.K. Goddard where the FRoGs are working hard on raising their playground funds. (See below.)

Tomorrow marks the 25th anniversary of National Public Lands Day so we hope your plans include a little bit of love for your favorite places. You'll find a number of events on the calendar both tomorrow and next Saturday (the 29th). But especially where flooding both pre- and post-Florence have done a number on trails and other facilities the need will be greater than ever for your time and attention. And the gratitude will be equal to the need!

With the continuation of Trails Month, good reading comes in the form of a blog post on DCNR's Good Natured page from Forestry's Michael Hoffman detailing his trek on the Old Logger's Path with his brother. You'll want to follow in their bootsteps.

A new feature has been added to the Pennsylvania's Conservation Heritage website. Check out 125 Years of Preservation and Investment via a new story map.

For two weeks in a row we get to share a "feel good" story involving a young person, although this week's 12th grader is a slightly older than last week's six year old Lily! Through the auspices of the PA Daily Environment Digest Blog, meet Peter Livengood from Fayette County in his quest to achieve the Boy Scouts of America's William T. Hornaday Silver Medal for Conservation. Part I of this four-part quest takes us to Cranberry Glade Lake near PPFF's western headquarters here in Confluence.

The Friends of Goddard (FRoGs) are really close to having enough money for their marina playground. Wouldn't this be a nice place to play?

You all did very well with the three things you need for camping during wet weather. My favorite response this week comes from Sandy the Horse Lady - good rain gear, a good book, and a good attitude. Those things will always serve you well, in fact!

An easy one for this week: what happens at 9:54 EDT on Saturday night?

Send in your answer and we'll enter your correct response into our monthly prize drawing. All correct answers each week will go into the hat and at the end of the month we'll draw one lucky winner. The more correct answers you submit in a month (up to four or the occasional five depending on the month), the more chances you'll have to win.

I really don't need a reason but if you could use some encouragement - #PATrailsMonth
