Our mission: To inspire stewardship of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests.

It would appear that 2017 is not going to go out like a lamb - but you are certainly going to want to have a full set of woolies at the ready for your New Year celebrations. Record snowfall for Christmas in Erie has the city and surrounding areas still trying to dig out and more on the way. So our thoughts are with them as they work through that and with everyone looking at bitter cold to run out the Old Year.

Our hearts are warm, though, with all the support we've received this year - financially and "morally." Your kind words as you read these weekly messages and weigh in on our posts and blogs and articles, when you contact your elected officials and tell them how much our parks and forests need their support - all of it makes working here a joy. Happy New Year!

A "crisp" morning this week at Pymatuning State Park - the renovated dam house looks lovely in the snow. Check out the original.

News of note

With all that cold enveloping the Keystone State this weekend and for the first few days of 2018, it seems prudent to offer a few tips on dressing for the occasion. Click this infographic from the National Weather Service for the complete picture.

Now here's a cool little bit of news from Pine Grove Furnace State Park and the Ironmaster's Mansion. Hikers of the Appalachian Trail know PGF as the midway point and the Ironmaster's as a great place to sleep indoors for a night after your traditional ice cream binge. It's already been available to rent for weddings and family reunions but now comes the announcement of the availability of a newly renovated bridal suite at the Mansion!

And, of course, if you are rushing to complete your still-deductible charitable contributions before the clock winds down on 2017, PPFF is always grateful for your support. There are big things to come in 2018!

At work and play in the parks and forests

You know it! Once again it would be easier to list the parks that are NOT hosting a First Day (or Last/First Night) Hike than the ones who are. This is one bandwagon I am happy to hop on.

However, do keep your eyes and clicking fingers on the DCNR website. The Friends of the Delaware Canal cancelled their Thursday afternoon hike and it is possible that others for the First Day/Night may cancel as well. Be safe!

Take five for trivia

Lots of good research followed our question on recognizing the spotted lanternfly throughout its lifecycle. Its distinctive markings make that a relatively easy proposition. But do read more (courtesy of the Penn State Extension folks) and be on the lookout for this insidious and dangerous pest.

The final "trivia" question for 2017 is not trivia at all but a chance to share your expertise. It's cold and you're looking to stay warm. What's YOUR can't-be-beat eat-this-and-feel-cozy comfort food? Mine is tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. And now I've found this recipe for Tomato and Grilled Cheese Soup. Glad tomorrow is a grocery shopping day! Share and I'll make a quick little downloadable booklet.

Submit your answer for entry into our random monthly prize drawing. Each correct response per week goes into the hat and at the end of the month one lucky winner receives a PPFF goodie. The more weeks you enter, the better your chances!
