Our mission: To inspire stewardship of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests.

A quick trip to Prince Gallitzin State Park on Wednesday night for the park's first-ever Volunteer Appreciation Dinner means a two-weeks-in-a-row-PGSP masthead! It was a beautiful morning when I woke up in Cabin 6 so it was great to take a quick walk along the lake before heading back home and getting back to work.

Because it's all hands on deck today for the ExtraGive through the Lancaster County Community Foundation. More information below.

Yep, today is ExtraGive day. By the time you're reading this, probably seven or eight hours have passed since the weblinks went live at midnight. But like the bird says, it's not too late to get in on the act!

And don't forget, ExtraGive and Take a Hike Day mean PPFF's own Amanda and Marci will be at Susquehannock State Park this morning for a hike. Meet at the parking lot for the Overlook Trail at 10:00 and go along!

North

With a somewhat crazy forecast looming for the weekend and the short Thanksgiving holiday week approaching, the events originally on the calendar for the North region have blown away in a cold almost winter wind! So take a little time to visit one of the parks in the region and DIY an outdoor excursion!

South

Who doesn't love a good campfire story? If that's up your alley, check out Campfire Tales at Cowans Gap tomorrow evening. Bundle up, and learn a little history, too!

East

The last (and biggest) volunteer day of the season takes place at Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center tomorrow morning. There are riparian buffers to be built! Similarly, get in on the volunteer act at Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center in the afternoon.

West

The good people at Friends of Ohiopyle invite you to a trail volunteer day tomorrow morning.

No matter what region of the commonwealth you want to visit, our website Events and the DCNR Calendar of Events are great sources for things to see and do. Bookmark them!

Here's a beautiful shot of the shape of things to come! Check out the original and a couple other beauties at Black Moshannon State Park by Travis Houston.

Take five for trivia

Good job, one and all! Many correct answers into the bucket with the sure knowledge that the poppy has long symbolized Veterans (and sometimes Memorial) Day in deference to the poem by John McCrae noting the blooming of the poppies in the fields of Flanders where so many of the war (World War I) dead fell. A sad and beautiful tribute are both the poem and the flower.

On a sillier (but still poetic) note this week, how did poet Emily Dickinson (with whom the word "silly" is rarely associated) characterize November?

Submit your answer for entry into our random monthly prize drawing. Each correct response per week goes into the hat and at the end of the month one lucky winner receives a PPFF goodie. The more weeks you enter, the better your chances!
