Our mission: To inspire stewardship of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests.

Summer's here but I'm not sure that the time is exactly "right for dancing in the streets." Some of those streets are in pretty difficult shape following this week's torrential downpours. Linn Run Road in the Forbes State Forest above the state park office is closed due to a washout, and I suspect that is not the only road in the state to be experiencing this problem.

Last week Marci, Joe, and Izzy Dog were able to take a few marvelous days and enjoy a Poe Valley State Park/Bald Eagle State Forest camping excursion. This week's masthead is a sparkling result!

Oh my. Are you a webcam addict like me? Here's one for you: the nest cam at the Purple Martin Conservation Association's headquarters at Presque Isle State Park. Four eggs waiting to hatch - estimated due date is July 1. Here's a screen shot. Oh my!

Marci and I rendezvoused in Ohiopyle yesterday afternoon to talk about our membership program. A big tree fell on Dinnerbell Road outside the borough and took down the electricity while we were there so we did our work in a darkened meeting room at the park office by the light coming in from the big windows overlooking the Falls. Still a beautiful place to meet, and a busload of students didn't seem to have been put off by the low light in the exhibits room. Actually I'm not sure you can tell from these photographs that it was low light. Who needs electricity?

After she left me in Ohiopyle, Marci headed out to the evening meeting of the Friends of Mont Alto, the oldest state park still in the system and one of the smallest. But that isn't stopping the Friends, who have dreams as tall as their beautiful picnic pavilion!

Speaking of membership - Did you miss it? We ran a "first day of summer" membership special yesterday. One year - half price. So okay. Since today is the first FULL day of summer, the link is still live until midnight tonight. $12.50. What a bargain!

Here's hoping for just a little summer sunshine this weekend so you can enjoy these and other terrific outings.

North

It's all the rage is DIY and Clear Creek State Park invites you to a late Saturday afternoon DIY for Wildlife workshop. Ideas abound!

South

The Friends of Cowans Gap invite you to their Outdoor Expo tomorrow including an Art in the Park event at the beach.

East

Saturday night is Moth Night at Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center, thanks to the Baird Ornithological Club and the Mengel Natural History Society.

West

A big weekend on the FRoG calendar at the Friends of Goddard State Park invite you to Pioneer Frolic. Come see life in the 18th century, all weekend long. It's been going on for 16 years so it must be something special!

No matter what region of the commonwealth you want to visit, our website Events and the DCNR Calendar of Events are great sources for things to see and do. Bookmark them!

Picture of the week

It may be a little difficult to get the full picture from this reproduction from the Pennsylvania State Forests Book of Faces so it's definitely worth a click to the original and the accompanying post. The photo is from Tuscarora State Forest and, as the post so eloquently states, it shows the desired aftermath of a prescribed burn the forest conducted this spring. We witness a lot of prescribed burns on the state forest and national wildlife refuge lands that surround our winter Florida home, with the same regenerative philosophy in mind. Find out more on the science of the prescribed burn on DCNR's Good Natured blog.

Take five for trivia

Last week's cryptic question fooled very few! I asked what notorious road hazard is more interesting as a geologic feature and the answer is a pothole! In Pennsylvania's particular case (and we have our share of road hazard potholes), it's Archbald Pothole State Park, at 38 feet deep sure to, as Steven put it, require a front end alignment in the event of an "encounter."

There is no "danger" involved in this week's question. So Mont Alto State Park is the oldest still in the system. When was it established?

Send in your answer and we'll enter your correct response into our monthly prize drawing. All correct answers each week will go into the hat and at the end of the month we'll draw one lucky winner. The more correct answers you submit in a month (up to four or the occasional five depending on the month), the more chances you'll have to win.
